Women's Health Services are offered to the public by the Monroe County Health Department.
Family Planning allows a couple to decide the best time for them to have a child. Family Planning visits include a thorough medical history, assessment of blood pressure, weight and height, Pap smear, and clinical breast examination. Routine STD screenings are also available. It has been determined that multivitamins are important for women of child-bearing age to prevent neural tube defects in infants, and each family planning client will receive a month’s supply of multivitamins to be taken once daily.
The health department also offers several different types of birth control ranging from several different types of combined oral contraceptives (the pill) to the depo-provera shot, that is given once every three months to a low dose hormone pill and the patch. When the client comes in for the initial visit, the practitioner will discuss which method is the most appropriate.
Female Cancer Screening services are available for ladies who are postmenopausal or who have had a hysterectomy. Cancer screening services available include a Pap smear, clinical breast examination and instructions for performing self breast examinations. General Cancer information and ways to stay healthy are also available. If needed, the Monroe County Health Department will schedule an appointment at the Monroe County Medical Center for mammography screening. For individuals over 50, rectal examinations and occult blood test of the stool is available.
The hours for female health services are 7:00 AM until 3:30 PM three days a week. To schedule an appointment call the Monroe County Health Department at 487-6782.
